anthropic publicly disclosed that it declined to release a model called mythos preview in april 2026 because the model had autonomously generated a cyberweapon capable of identifying over ten thousand software vulnerabilities in purportedly secure networks. separately, anthropic confirmed it embedded approximately six forward-deployed engineers with the nsa to support offensive ai cyber operations. the dual disclosure — a withheld autonomous vulnerability hunter and an active nsa partnership — is the first explicit public acknowledgment of frontier-lab integration into us offensive cyber infrastructure at this level of specificity. the gap between what the model did and what anthropic chose to say about it, and when, is itself a signal worth recording.
