a phylogenetic analysis places a novel human betacoronavirus as a relative of the bat viruses hku5 and hku4 from southern china, and finds a bat coronavirus sequence collected in the netherlands sitting alongside the emc/2012 strain — the original mers virus. most of the group 2c bat viruses in the analysis came from vespertilionid bats, which are common across both europe and asia. the structural point is geographic: a european bat sample clustering with a middle-eastern human pathogen widens the assumed reservoir range.
