openai and anthropic jointly disclosed what they call the largest ai distillation campaign ever measured: 25,000 fraudulent accounts linked to chinese labs generating 28.8 million interactions with claude between april and june 2026, allegedly to train competing models on its outputs. the same cycle, china's z.ai released an open-weight model that beats gpt-5.5 on coding benchmarks at one-sixth the cost. the accusation and the competitive result arriving together is the structural point — whatever the mechanism, the capability gap is closing.
